CAN'T WAIT FOR AIRVENTURE! Make plans now for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
2007, July 23-29

It happens only once a year, and it happens only in Oshkosh. Many aviation
enthusiasts return to AirVenture year after year because the event is more than a
collection of attractions, activities, and experiences - it's a way of life.

Those loyal attendees are making their plans to attend AirVenture 2007 now,
even before we've made our first major attraction announcement.

Why? AirVenture is the aviation world's family reunion - the people are as
essential to the event as the aircraft, attractions, information, and entertainment.
They come for the cultural experience.

And they know they can count on "The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration" to
deliver the blockbuster attractions for which AirVenture is famous (watch this
website for announcements!), and that AirVenture's staple offerings are reason
enough to come again.

Plan now to come back to AirVenture - or to begin an annual tradition of your own!

Celebrating "Flying, Forests and the Future."

The Forest is nestled on a gentle slope overlooking Lake Warnock, on the
outskirts of Atchison. It is made up of trees from all fifty states and thirty-five
countries around the world where Honorees reside. Each tree has its own flag,
and on special occasions, the Forest is ablaze with the brilliance of colors of
more than 100 flags blowing in the breeze.

Winding through the Forest is Memory Lane, honoring those who have, or still
are, contributing to all facets of aviation and aerospace. It is a five foot wide
(wheel chair friendly) walk and embedded in the concrete walk are granite
plaques engraved with the names of over 700 honorees. Included in this
illustrious list are markers memorializing such aviation notables as Amelia
Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, Jeana Yeager, Rajiv Gandhi, the Wright Brothers,
Sally Ride, Chuck Yeager, Beryl Markham, General "Jimmy" Doolittle, President
George Bush, General Colin Powell, and Lt Col (now Col) Eileen M. Collins, the
first woman to pilot a shuttle (Discovery) into space. In 1976, Secretary of the
Interior, Kleppe dedicated Memory Lane as the first National Recreation Trail in
Kansas.

From its inception, the International Forest of Friendship was founded and lead
by Fay Gillis Wells and Joe Carrigan, who served as Co-Chairmen. Fay Wells
was one of the Charter members of The Ninety-Nines and has been honored for
her great interest and support of aviation and as an outstanding journalist. Joe
Carrigan resided in Atchison and was responsible for the daily decisions needed
to run the Forest. Unfortunately, we lost Joe in June of 1996 and Fay in 2002. It
will be difficult, if not next to impossible, to replace both of them but their sons,
Pat Carrigan and Lin Wells, have assumed the duties of Co-Chairmen. In 1991, a
beautiful gazebo was dedicated to Fay Wells, in honor of her leadership to the
Forest, and paid for by her many friends throughout the World.

Who are the Honorees inducted into the Forest of Friendship?

Women and men of all ages who have given dedicated service, leadership,
friendship, and supportive effort to help others achieve aviation goals.
  • Women and men of all ages who have been supportive and contributed to
the furtherment of aviation. The Honorees need not be pilots.
  • Pioneers in Aviation and Aerospace.
  • Aviation writers and educators who spend their lives encouraging others
    to fly.
  • Women and men of all ages who have made significant contributions to
the development of aviation; and those who have established recognition
    for setting world aviation records.

Girls With Wings is running an activity station for younger girls, who
are in 1st and 2nd grade, whereas the event last year was for girls in
the upper elementary.  There will be 100 girls in the morning
(9-noon) and another set of 100 in the afternoon (1-4 PM) rotated
through 6 stations, so there would be about 16 girls per group.

Brownie Blast-Off

I had the opportunity to work with Lynda at the Brownie Blast-off event held at NASA.   She introduced herself to these interested
aviators and told them how she was a pilot and they could be pilots, too.  A poster of the cockpit instruments and yoke were at each
table and she explained how you fly the plane.  She presented questions and excited hands went up quickly to give a response.
Lynda had planned a great hands-on lesson where the participants assembled a small plane and identified the key parts of the
plane.  She then had each girl “fly” a plane with a unique idea she had of using a balloon, drinking straw and string.  All of the girls
were very excited about this and were able to “fly” their plane in their selected direction and altitude.  Lynda did a fantastic job in
showing these girls how aviation could be for them and that girls can fly, too!    I was so impressed at how Lynda put excitement on
these girl’s (and advisor’s) faces.  She has a charismatic personality and exemplified the perfect role model.   I’m sure these girls left
the event with one thought…they were going to be like Lynda Meeks, the pilot that showed them that girls can fly, too!
